White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Fox Business news on Sunday that “he doesn't understand why Democrats didn't support the GOP-backed economic relief plan, saying it could have been a great starting point for helping Americans in need. Kudlow told reporters outside the White House that he gave "kudos" to the "unified GOP" in the Senate for voting in favor of a bill that would have helped the economy. The vote was 52 to 47 in favor of passing the bill and every republican senator except one voted yes. He said, “the bill, which was a slimmed-down version of the Republicans' July proposal, was defeated in the Senate by eight votes, with every Democrat voting against it. Kudlow said that "$500 billion, it would be a great start. With key areas like small-business assistance, back to school money, vaccine money, virus liability restrictions, child care, things of that sort.” He said “How could that be bad? You can't just have everything you want in life."
According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the bill didn't include "every idea" the GOP wanted, but was intended to be a round of relief that could garner bipartisan support. He explained how it included funds for health care, schools, unemployment and more loans for small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program. The problem was that Democrats criticized the $500B price tag of the package for failing to address the needs of those who need economic help during the coronavirus pandemic and lambasted the amount of aid as being wholly insufficient.
Kudlow said that he believes Democrats and Republicans should be able to compromise as they did in March with CARES Act. He explained how “he’s just trying to stay on the policy side of this because the things he mentioned are all good things.” He said how “in the talks in recent weeks, there has been agreement and there has been disagreements about the size and scope of the bill”. He goes on to say how in his opinion “a third of that Democratic package had nothing to do with the virus, and that’s not right.” He explained how “he knows that’s a political move by the Democrats, but there’s no reason why they couldn’t have agreed to five or six key things and pass that bill already”. Ultimately, he said some aspects like the liability restrictions mentioned are really essential, the small business help is really essential, and the kids going back to school assistance is essential.
While many economists consider another round of relief crucial to America's recovery from the pandemic's economic fallout, Kudlow isn't in that camp. He told Politico chief economic correspondent that the economy can bounce back even if Congress doesn't reach a deal—if businesses continue to reopen and put people back to work. Kudlow reiterated his position yesterday and said, “I don't think the recovery hinges on this bill, but the reality is that it would be extremely helpful. So ultimately he said he doesn’t understand the logic behind not passing a bil. Why not do it?”. As of right now though White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Friday said he was unsure whether Congress will pass another coronavirus relief package before the November election. During an interview with Fox Business News he said “well, in truth I don't know if a bill will pass before the election“.
