Queen's Speech, post-election: Brexit opportunities will benefit whole of UK - Queen Elizabeth II
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled plans for "a historic overhaul of the UK’s constitution", democratic institutions and justice system in a Queen’s Speech which he described as “the most radical… in a generation”.
Buoyed by his 80-seat landslide victory in last week’s general election, the prime minister made clear his intention to use his new-found dominance in the House of Commons not only to drive through Brexit on 31 January but to institute reforms which will alter the face of the nation for decades to come.
Her Majesty opened her speech declaring that the Government will now go forth to take the UK out of the EU.
"My Government’s priority is to deliver the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union on 31 January. My Ministers will bring forward legislation to ensure the United Kingdom’s exit on that date and to make the most of the opportunities that this brings for all the people of the United Kingdom.
Thereafter, my ministers will seek a future relationship with the European Union based on a free trade agreement that benefits the whole of the United Kingdom".
